How to Use Your iPhone as a MIDI Controller in Ableton Live

Install NueCtrl on your iPhone, connect it to your computer over Bluetooth LE MIDI, Wi-Fi (Network / RTP-MIDI) or USB, switch the port's Track and Remote inputs on in Live's Link/Tempo/MIDI preferences, then use MIDI Map Mode to assign your phone's motion to a Macro knob, a Send, or any device parameter. Ableton Live has no idea the controller is a phone — to Live it is just another MIDI port.

What you need

Part 1 — Connect your iPhone

This part is the same for every DAW, because it happens at the operating-system level before Live is involved. Pick one of the three routes below. If you want the full walkthrough with screenshots of each dialog, see the MIDI connection setup guide.

Option A — Bluetooth LE MIDI

The fastest route, and the only one that needs no cable and no shared network. NueCtrl advertises itself over Bluetooth LE when it launches.

  1. On your iPhone, open Settings → Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  2. Launch NueCtrl and go to Settings → Connection → Bluetooth MIDI, then tap Advertise so the phone is visible.
  3. On your Mac, open Audio MIDI Setup (Applications → Utilities), choose Window → Show MIDI Studio, and click the Bluetooth icon.
  4. Find NueCtrl BLE in the device list and click Connect. NueCtrl's status indicator will read Connected.

On Windows: Bluetooth MIDI support is inconsistent. Windows 10 and 11 can pair a Bluetooth LE MIDI device at the OS level, but not every DAW exposes it as a selectable port, and some setups need a third-party Bluetooth MIDI bridge before the port shows up. If Ableton Live does not list the device after pairing, use the Wi-Fi route below instead — it is the more dependable wireless path on Windows.

Option B — Wi-Fi (Network / RTP-MIDI)

Lower latency than Bluetooth, still wireless. Roughly 5 ms in practice.

  1. Put the iPhone and the computer on the same Wi-Fi network — 5 GHz if you have the choice.
  2. macOS: Network MIDI is built in. Open Audio MIDI Setup → Window → Show MIDI Studio, double-click the Network icon, click + under My Sessions and tick Enabled. Select NueCtrl in the Directory panel and click Connect.
  3. Windows: there is no built-in Network MIDI. Install rtpMIDI (the free RTP-MIDI driver from Tobias Erichsen), create a session in it, and connect to NueCtrl from its directory list.
  4. In Live, the input will appear under the session name (for example Session 1), not under the phone's name.

Option C — USB

The lowest latency and the most reliable route — around 2 ms — and the right choice for a take you intend to keep.

  1. Connect the iPhone to the Mac with a Lightning or USB-C cable.
  2. First time only: in Audio MIDI Setup, choose Window → Show Audio Devices, select your iPhone and click Enable.
  3. NueCtrl detects the cable and switches to USB MIDI automatically. The port appears as NueCtrl.

USB is a macOS route. Getting MIDI off an iPhone over USB relies on macOS exposing the phone as a MIDI device in Audio MIDI Setup. On Windows, use Wi-Fi with rtpMIDI for the low-latency path.

Part 2 — Ableton Live setup

Live does not auto-enable MIDI inputs. Every new port arrives switched off, which is why a correctly paired phone can still look invisible inside Live. Two switches decide what it can do.

Step 1 — Enable the port

  1. Open Live's preferences. On macOS this is Live → Settings (called Preferences in older versions); on Windows it is Options → Preferences. The keyboard shortcut Cmd/Ctrl+, works in every recent version.
  2. Go to the Link/Tempo/MIDI tab — newer releases label it Link, Tempo & MIDI. It is the same tab.
  3. Scroll to MIDI Ports and find the input carrying NueCtrl: NueCtrl BLE for Bluetooth, the session name for Wi-Fi, or NueCtrl for USB.
  4. Switch Track to On so the port can feed MIDI tracks.
  5. Switch Remote to On so the port can drive MIDI mappings.

Track and Remote are not the same thing. Track On lets the CC stream reach a track's input — useful when you want to record raw CC into a clip. Remote On is what MIDI Map Mode listens to. If mapping seems to do nothing, Remote is almost always the switch that is still off. This one detail accounts for most "Ableton won't see my controller" reports.

Step 2 — Map a parameter with MIDI Map Mode

  1. Click the MIDI button at the top right of the Live window, or press Cmd+M (macOS) / Ctrl+M (Windows). Mappable controls turn blue.
  2. Click the parameter you want — a Macro knob, a Send level, a filter's Frequency, a device dial.
  3. Tilt your iPhone so NueCtrl transmits its CC. Live captures the incoming controller and writes the assignment into the MIDI Mappings browser on the left.
  4. Press Cmd/Ctrl+M again to leave MIDI Map Mode. The mapping is live.
  5. To adjust the range, open the MIDI Mappings list and edit the Min and Max columns. Setting Min above Max inverts the direction — handy when the natural tilt direction feels backwards.

Mappings are saved with the Live Set, so a template Set with your NueCtrl assignments already in place is worth building once. Live also lets you map the same CC to several parameters at once, which is how you get one movement to open a filter and push a send at the same time.

Step 3 — Record the movement as automation

A mapped parameter behaves exactly like a mouse-drawn one, which means Live will record it. Arm the Automation Arm button in the transport, start recording into a clip or the Arrangement, and ride the parameter while the part plays. Live writes an automation lane you can then trim, curve or copy to another clip. This is the whole point: the curve comes from a hand movement, not from drawing breakpoints.

Part 3 — What to map in Ableton Live

NueCtrl converts iPhone motion into continuous MIDI CC, so it earns its place on parameters that want to move — not on on/off switches. Live's architecture offers a few targets that are unusually good fits.

Macro knobs on an Instrument or Audio Rack

The single best target in Live. Wrap a device chain in a Rack, map several parameters to one Macro with different ranges and curves, then map NueCtrl to the Macro. One tilt now moves filter cutoff, reverb amount and drive together, each in its own range, and you only manage one automation lane. Macro Variations and the Rack's Chain Selector give you further ground to cover with a single gesture.

Send levels

Riding a Send to a reverb or delay return is a classic mix move that never sounds right when drawn by mouse — it is fundamentally a performance. Map NueCtrl to Send A or Send B and push the vocal into the tail on the line ends, then pull it back for the next phrase.

Auto Filter frequency and resonance

The filter sweep is the reason most people want a physical controller in the first place. Map cutoff to your phone's tilt and the sweep inherits the acceleration and hesitation of a real hand. Add resonance to the same Macro if you want the sweep to bite harder as it opens.

Wavetable, Operator and Drift modulation targets

Live's own synths expose plenty of continuous parameters worth performing — Wavetable's wavetable position, Operator's oscillator coarse/fine and level, Drift's filter and LFO amount. Map the position controls in particular: they are where a moving hand reads as musical rather than as an effect.

CC1 and CC11 into orchestral and sampled instruments

If you run orchestral libraries in Live, route NueCtrl's CC to CC1 (modulation) and CC11 (expression) and drive the library's own dynamics and expression layers directly — no mapping needed, because the instrument already listens to those controllers. This is where motion control beats a mouse most clearly: sustained string and brass lines live or die on the shape of the CC11 curve.

Resolution note. NueCtrl's Max Mode captures motion at up to 500 Hz, which produces far denser curves than a fader can. Dense CC data is fine for a couple of parameters but can clutter an Arrangement if you record it into a dozen lanes. Record the passes you care about, and use Live's automation-simplification and manual curve editing to thin the rest.

Can I use an iPhone as a MIDI controller in Ableton Live?

Yes. Live treats an iPhone running NueCtrl like any other MIDI input. Connect over Bluetooth LE MIDI, Wi-Fi (Network / RTP-MIDI) or USB, enable the port in the Link/Tempo/MIDI tab, and use MIDI Map Mode to assign it to Macros, Sends or any device parameter.

Why does my iPhone not appear in Ableton Live's MIDI Ports list?

Live enumerates MIDI ports when it starts. Complete the connection at the operating-system level first — pair the Bluetooth device, or connect the Network MIDI session in Audio MIDI Setup — and then launch or restart Live so the port appears.

Why does MIDI Map Mode not pick up the movement?

MIDI mapping uses the Remote input, which is a separate switch from Track. In the Link/Tempo/MIDI tab, switch Remote to On for the port carrying NueCtrl. Track On alone routes notes and CC into tracks but will not create a mapping.

Does Bluetooth MIDI add too much latency for Ableton Live?

Bluetooth MIDI typically runs around 10-15 ms, which is fine for riding a filter or a Macro but noticeable for tight rhythmic work. Wi-Fi is roughly 5 ms and USB roughly 2 ms. Use USB or Wi-Fi when timing matters.
