Use your iPhone as a MIDI controller — a guide for every DAW

- Bitwig Studio Add the controller in Settings, then use the mapping browser — or the MIDI modulator.
How the connection works
Every guide shares the same first half, because connecting an iPhone to a computer as a MIDI device happens at the operating-system level, before your DAW is involved. There are three routes, and the right one depends on how much latency you can live with.
- USB — around 2 ms. The lowest latency and the most reliable. Connect the cable and
enable the iPhone once in macOS Audio MIDI Setup; NueCtrl switches to USB MIDI on its own
and appears as
NueCtrl. This route depends on macOS exposing the phone as a MIDI device, so it is a Mac route. - Wi-Fi (Network / RTP-MIDI) — around 5 ms. Wireless, and quick enough for almost everything. macOS has Network MIDI built in; on Windows you install rtpMIDI. The input shows up in your DAW under the session name rather than the phone's name, which surprises people.
- Bluetooth LE MIDI — around 10-15 ms. No cable, no shared network, fastest to set
up. NueCtrl advertises itself on launch and appears as
NueCtrl BLE. Fine for riding a filter, noticeable for tight rhythmic work. Support on Windows is inconsistent.

What motion control is actually good at
NueCtrl sends continuous MIDI CC, which means it earns its place on parameters that want to move — and adds nothing to switches. The targets that pay off across every DAW are the same handful:
- Filter cutoff and resonance — the sweep that gave hardware controllers their reputation. Performed by hand, it inherits acceleration and hesitation a drawn curve never has.
- Send levels to a reverb or delay return — pushing a vocal into the tail at the end of a line is a performance, not an edit.
- CC1 (modulation) and CC11 (expression) into orchestral and sampled instruments. These need no mapping at all: the instrument already listens. Sustained string and brass lines live or die on the shape of that curve.
- Macro-style controls — Ableton's Macros, Logic's Smart Controls, FL's Patcher, Cubase's Quick Controls, Studio One's Macro Controls, Bitwig's modulators. One movement, many parameters, one automation lane to manage.
- Morph and position controls on wavetable and granular instruments, where the parameter is the sound rather than a treatment of it.

FAQ
Can I use an iPhone as a MIDI controller?
Yes. With NueCtrl installed, an iPhone appears to your computer as an ordinary MIDI input over Bluetooth LE MIDI, Wi-Fi (Network / RTP-MIDI) or USB. Any DAW that accepts MIDI can use it — no extra hardware and no drivers on macOS.
Which connection method should I use?
USB is the lowest latency at roughly 2 ms and is the macOS route. Wi-Fi (Network / RTP-MIDI) is roughly 5 ms and works on macOS natively and on Windows with rtpMIDI. Bluetooth LE MIDI is roughly 10-15 ms and is the quickest to set up. Use USB or Wi-Fi when timing matters.
Does this work on Windows?
Yes, over Wi-Fi. Install rtpMIDI on the PC and connect to NueCtrl from its session directory. Bluetooth MIDI on Windows is inconsistent — the OS can pair a device but not every DAW exposes it — and the USB route depends on macOS exposing the iPhone as a MIDI device, so Wi-Fi is the dependable Windows path.
